And the Oscar goes to… not the Muslim Ban that’s for sure!
People all over the US found themselves protesting yet again against actions made by President Donald Trump. Trump signed an executive order that will:
- Indefinitely barred Syrian refugees from entering the United States
- Suspend all refugee admissions for 120 days
- Block citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries (Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.) refugees or otherwise, from entering the United States for 90 days
Now you all may be thinking, “How can you relate this to film!?” “I came here for entertainment not politics!?” Oh, I found away. You get the best of both worlds with this blog!
Iranian director and Academy Award nominee Asghar Farhadi will not be attending the Academy Awards on Feb. 26 even if he was granted access into the United States. He had intentions on attending the cinematic event but then he stated in an article by The New York Times that, “it now seems that the possibility of this presence is being accompanied by ifs and buts which are in no way acceptable to me even if exceptions were to be made for my trip.”
But if you really think about it, this isn’t the first outrageous law that has been put into place. There are many “dumb” laws that are issued in the United States. Some that you wouldn’t even think were true! So to shed light on this situation, I played a game with my fellow students at Xavier to see how well they knew Louisiana State laws.
